The classic soul ingredients are all authentically presented; Joss hits all the right notes and injects her vocal lines with all the right inflections. Indeed, her version of The White Stripe's "Fell In Love With A Boy" blends so well into the funky soul landscape that those less familiar with contemporary rock might miss the ironic juxtaposition altogether. However, reassuringly comfortable though this music is, you can't help but feel it lacks any real bite
Joss Stone was barely legal to drive to the studio when she began recording these '60s soul gems. It turned out she was a natural. With her energetic, smoky voice, she boils the originals down to an essential groove, even turning the one outlier, The White Stripes' "Fell in Love With a Girl," into a smooth funk jam with the help of Questlove. The singer saves her best work, though, for the closer, a patient, nearly a cappella take on "For the Love of You. The Soul Sessions Joss Stone.
JOSS STONE The Soul Sessions (2003 UK CD featuring classic soul covers alongside reworkings of songs by John Sebastian and The White Stripes featuring collaborations with Angie Stone & The Roots picture sleeve CDREL2). Joss Stone is blessed with a strong voice and a will to sing old-school soul and The Soul Sessions is worthy of more than novelty status. Wisely avoiding iconic songs by the genre's biggest names, Stone and.
There's no missing the thrill of novelty that runs through recent coverage of Joss Stone. See! a white Devon teenager become America's newest soul sensation. Hear! her note-perfect re-creation of the 1970s Miami soul sound. Marvel! at the predictable kerfuffle that erupts every time a white person enters a black genre. The disparity between the person and the voice is both Stone's main selling point and a distraction, so The Soul Sessions seems like an attempt to acclimatise people before her album of original material arrives later this year
