Aiken co-wrote a bestselling memoir in 2004, Learning to Sing. In 2004 he also had a televised Christmas special, A Clay Aiken Christmas. During much of 2008 he appeared on Broadway in the musical comedy Spamalot, in the role of Sir Robin. In 2010 he hosted the PBS special Tried & True Live!. He has also had numerous cameo and guest appearances on TV shows. In 2012 he competed in the fifth season of The Celebrity Apprentice, coming in second to Arsenio Hall. 2006–08: A Thousand Different Ways And All Is Well. 2008–09: On My Way Here. 2009–11: Tried and True. 2011–present: Steadfast.
Tried And True features Aiken's unique covers of classic songs from the 1950s and 1960s including 'Can't Take My Eyes Off You', 'What Kind Of Fool Am I?', 'Mack The Knife', 'Unchained Melody', 'There's A Kind Of Hush' and 'Suspicious Minds'. I believe that with this album, Clay Aiken has demonstrated that he is willing to stretch, and that he is here to stay. 3 people found this helpful.
Clay Aiken’s charms have never been of the modern persuasion - even when he was giving Ruben Studdard a run for his money on American Idol he seemed a throwback, either to the ‘60s when he could be singing show tunes, or to the late ‘70s when he could be singing gauche soft rock. He sang the latter on 2008’s On My Way Here, creating a record with a measure of credible modern appeal that didn’t quite turn out a hit, so he opted for his other style on 2010’s Tried & True, whose very title admits that he’s not experimenting this time around.
For Clay Aiken, Tried and True was about getting back to himself after a career performing more pop-oriented material. There are a lot of elements to this album that are about me returning to what I'm comfortable with,' Aiken says. I've often joked with friends that I feel like I was born at the wrong time because the person I am and the songs I like to sing are all from earlier eras. To me, older songs are more melodically appealing and beautiful. So doing this album was kind of an opportunity to just be myself.
