Memorial Album is a compilation album by trumpeter Bunny Berigan that was released posthumously. Drawn from sessions where he was bandleader of his Orchestra, tributes from publications appeared on the inside of the cover titled "Final Salute to Bunny Berigan". In November 1944, critics hailed the album as a testimonial to the late Berigan's playing style. Due to similarities in tone, phrasing, and ability, Berigan was often compared to Bix Beiderbecke.
Roland Bernard "Bunny" Berigan (November 2, 1908 – June 2, 1942) was an American jazz trumpeter and bandleader who rose to fame during the swing era, but whose career and influence were shortened by alcoholism and ended with his early death at age 33 from cirrhosis. Although he composed some jazz instrumentals such as "Chicken and Waffles" and "Blues", Berigan was best known for his virtuoso jazz trumpeting
This album, from the vaults of RCA, contains Berigan's biggest solo hit I Can't Get Started, plus Caravan, The Wearin' Of The Green and Black Bottom. Bunny Berigan (1908-1942) was one of the most talented trumpet players ever, but he died so young, he is less well known than he should be, especially to today's young people. His trumpet playing on the first track's "I Can't Get Started" is a thrilling demonstration of a human approaching perfection. The remaining fourteen tracks are mainly old standbys from the "big band" era starting in the 1920s. These did not impress me, partly because of my overexposure to them and partly because I heard them this time on a CD, but think they would be best heard in a setting ideal for slow dancing and sentimental pondering.
Both of the LPs were drawn from mono 78s Berigan cut in the '30s, so the sound reflects the source and there is a fair amount of needle wear and noise on a few of the tracks.
