96 Tears is the debut album by the American garage rock band ? and the Mysterians, released in 1966. It peaked at number 66 on Billboard's Pop Albums chart. The single "96 Tears" reached number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 on October 29, prior to release of the album. The album and the single "96 Tears" were both on the charts for fifteen weeks, while the single "I Need Somebody" was on the charts for ten weeks.

Jack Frost is a personification of frost, ice, snow, sleet, winter, and freezing cold. He is a variant of Old Man Winter who is held responsible for frosty weather, nipping the fingers and toes in such weather, coloring the foliage in autumn, and leaving fern-like patterns on cold windows in winter. Starting in late 19th century literature, more developed characterizations of Jack Frost depict him as a sprite-like character, sometimes appearing as a sinister mischief-maker or as a hero.
Jack Frost" was released in 1991, the year after the demise of the first run of the Go-Betweens. The Church, of course, were still in business. My guess is that Grant McLennan jumped at the chance to explore more electric and more psychedelic approaches than Robert Forster (or the fans for that matter) would have countenanced in the Go-Bees. And perhaps Steve Kilbey just jumped at the chance to work with a famously prolific songwriter
