Year of No Light is a French post-metal band formed in Bordeaux in 2001. On their 2006 debut album Nord, the band combined a dark and aggressive sludge metal sound with psychedelic atmospheres inspired by post-rock and shoegazing. In 2008, they underwent a significant line-up change, replacing their vocalist by a third guitarist and a second drummer to become an instrumental sextet.

Depicted upon French post-metallers Year of No Light's latest LP Ausserwelt is a cavernous like island surrounded by a sea of black, brooding in it's seclusion and mysterious contents seemingly undiscovered in it's haze of fog and twilight. If you think that sounds interesting then you need to hear the music. The beginning of the album draws you in as if the small island dwelling on the cover art is inhabited by some mythological siren harpie crooning your distant sailing vessel closer to smoggy shore with her calling song. This wall of drone almost melts into melodic form when the drums are introduced and within minutes of having started you'd think you were listening to the climax of a post-rock song.
Overall, Year of No Light's effort Ausserwelt is definitely something that anyone who enjoys massive sounding, cinematic metal should consider giving a full and honest listen. Ausserwelt is good, very good even, and while it's the first drone doom/post-whatever album I've heard for a while that's really made my dick hard it isn't quite perfect. The tendency of YoNL to favour their massive, blurry, effect laden approach over, you know, actually playing lines/riffs etc. works well for a while but after a while you do start to yearn for a few actual riffs (hard to call those really slow chord progressions "riffs") to get your teeth into and get your neck hurting, or perhaps for a surprising.
