When Bruce Springsteen finally broke through to national recognition in the fall of 1975 after a decade of trying, critics hailed him as the savior of rock roll, the single artist who brought together all the exuberance of '50s rock and the thoughtfulness of '60s rock, molded into a '70s style. He rocked as hard as Jerry Lee Lewis, his lyrics were as complicated as Bob Dylan's, and his concerts were near-religious celebrations of all that was best in music. The first cuts present the Springsteen of the early to mid-'70s; these performances, most of them drawn from a July 1978 show at the Roxy in Los Angeles, give us the romantic, hopeful, earnest Springsteen of "4th of July, Asbury Park (Sandy)" and "Thunder Road.

Bruce Springsteen to Release 'Chapter and Verse' Companion Album with Autobiography Launch. Nearly two hours into the show, Springsteen steered clear of any song past 1974. He kept it old school, bringing out old friends Spanish Johnny for Incident on 57th Street and "Rosalita" - who came out earlier than the encores - before returning to his bar band roots with a cover of Pretty Flamingo, and some insight into his eating habits. You have challenged the E Street Band, he said, adding that the three-night stand was the most fun the group ever had at the Meadowlands. With that, he concluded with a song for the hometown Jersey Girls, as the sky ignited with fireworks and capped off another historic night.

After another marathon tour, Springsteen gave the E Street Band notice in November 1989, breaking up a celebrated unit that had stayed together 15 years. In March 1992, he simultaneously released Human Touch and Lucky Town, and though the albums premiered near the top of the charts, they were less successful with fans than previous efforts. The album was an immediate best-seller. Springsteen followed it with The Ghost of Tom Joad (November 1995), another low-key, downcast, near-acoustic effort and embarked upon a brief solo tour.
