What’s Going On is Marvin Gaye’s eleventh studio album, released on May 21, 1971, by the Motown Records label Tamla. The album is a concept album, with a circular structure (the last song is a reprise of the introduction’s theme). Additionally, each song flows into the next one. The storyline is told from the point of view of a veteran returning home from Vietnam to find a country full of injustice, violence and oppression. Sonically, the album features soulful and passionate vocals, pulling influences from gospel and jazz. Although it spawned three hits, this was Motown’s first true album
The What's Going On album takes on many issues, including the environment ("Mercy Mercy Me") and poverty ("Inner City Blues"). It was the first album Gaye released that sold a lot of copies. Until then, like most Motown artists, he had lots of hit singles but album sales were secondary. A possibly apocryphal story has circulated that in-house Motown studio musician James Jamerson, who is regarded as one of the greatest bass players ever, recorded his part for this song while lying flat on his back as he was too intoxicated to stand upright. More songs from Marvin Gaye. Elaine from Waldorf, MdThe album "What's Going On" is in my opinion, one of, if not the best album of all time. The themes are timeless-war, poverty, drug addiction. I loved Marvin Gaye and I don't think there's another performer who comes close to him.
The initial idea for What’s Going On came to Four Tops member Obie Benson when he was in San Francisco in 1969. They had the Haight-Ashbury then, all the kids up there with the long hair and everything, he told MOJO. The police was beating on the kids, but they wasn’t bothering anybody. He absorbed himself to the extent that when you heard the song you could see the people and feel the hurt and pain. We measured him for the suit, and he tailored it. Marvin was so thrilled by What’s Going On that he tracked down Berry Gordy while the boss was on vacation. I was in the Bahamas trying to relax, Gordy recalled in a Motown documentary. He called and said, ‘Look, I’ve got these songs. When he told me they were protest songs, I said, ‘Marvin, why do you want to ruin your career?’
In 1992, the American rock group 4 Non Blondes released What’s Up? a song which has since become a queer anthem, popping up unexpectedly in an LGBTQ film, TV series and a viral video. Most recently, the song showed up in a fun scene from The Miseducation of Cameron Post, the recent dramatic film about teens in an ex-gay conversion therapy program. The song appeared on their first album Bigger, Better, Faster, More! And even though most people refer to the song as What’s Going On?, the band deliberately titled it What’s Up? to avoid being confused with Marvin Gaye’s 1971 song What’s Going On. Lady Gaga also covered 4 Non Blondes’ ‘What’s Up?’ during Linda Perry’s 2015 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, image via Getty. The song itself is about trying to feel okay in an oppressive society.
