Jazzateers were a Scottish pop/post-punk group formed in 1980 who recorded for Rough Trade Records. The group was formed by songwriters Ian Burgoyne and Keith Band. The band's early lineup comprised Burgoyne, Band, singer Alison Gourlay, and drummer Colin Auld. One of the early Jazzateers recordings with Gourlay on vocals, "Blue Moon Over Hawaii", was later included on the Messthetics series of compilations.

The early career of Scottish indie pop band the Jazzateers was star-crossed to say the least. Originally signed to the legendary Postcard Records, they got there just in time for the label to fold. Though they regrouped and later pieced together an album with a different lineup, their initial promise was never fully reached. The 2014 collection Don't Let Your Son Grow Up to Be a Cowboy seeks to examine the band's nascent stage by rounding up unreleased demos, singles that never came out, and songs from 1983's Lee, the album that never was.
In the early '80s, you couldn't do much better if you were a Scottish indie pop band than to be signed to Postcard Records. Although Orange Juice and Josef K had already moved on, it was still the hippest label around and the Jazzateers must have felt lucky to be affiliated with the imprint in 1981. The group carried on with new vocalists Deirdre and Louise Rutkowski, quickly recording an album titled Lee for the newly launched Postcard International. It was never released, Postcard was soon dissolved, and the band changed lineups again.
