Complete your Television Personalities collection. I have just returned from a rehearsal with An Infernal Contraption who feature Jowe Head and one of the mixers of this album, Cos Chapman. Jowe gave me a copy of the CD tonight - I've just asked him to elaborate on the mystery of the numbers written upside down across his cover picture - "678 1924" - some mysterious code perhaps???
describe Beautiful Despair as a first draft of Closer to God than a proper standalone LP. It is a true lost album in one literal sense: Head admitted recently that he had mislaid the tapes from these sessions and simply happened upon them while looking for something else. But it is not as though 48 minutes’ worth of never-before-heard vintage Television Personalities material has been unearthed after all these years. Indeed, the familiar tracks here sound cruder and less refined than their finalized Closer to God counterparts, ramshackle in a manner that can be quite appealing.
After Television Personalities finished recording their classic Privilege album, they had to wait two years until it was actually released. In the interim, main Personality Daniel Treacy kept writing and writing, ending up with enough songs to populate their next album and then some. In 2018, Fire Records released Beautiful Despair, a collection of 15 of the songs the duo recorded. Many of the tracks ended up on the next TVPs album, 1992's Closer to God, a couple ended up in the band's live set, and the rest were never released, though they easily could have been. Treacy was on a roll after making one of the best TVPs records (Privilege), and here he delves into his own bad habits and mental frailties, his famous friends, despair (of course), and that old standby, love.

Sure, Beautiful Despair was not dug up by fans, but directly brought up by the masterminds behind the band, Dan Treacy and Jowe Head (also of Swell Maps fame), but the sentiment is the same. And if you are at all familiar with the doings of Television Personalities, you know what to expect. This album is that good old, albeit slightly fuzzier than usual, lo-fi subtle post-punk. This is not just fuzzier than usual; it also gives off the obvious unfinished aesthetic. When this album was recorded back in the warmth of 1989’s carefree mood, it was decided that these recordings.
Home-recorded between 1989-90 at Jowe Head’s Stoke Newington flat, Beautiful Despair finds Head and TVPs mainstay Dan Treacy gamely working through a clutch of the latter’s prickly and pallid compositions.

Recorded in 1990 by Jowe at his flat in Glading Terrace, Stoke Newington (shortly before it was demolished), over a number sessions on a portable 4-track cassette-tape machine.
