Oliver Nelson (on tenor and alto sax) meets Eric Dolphy (alto, bass clarinet and flute) on this frequently exciting sextet session with trumpeter Richard Williams, pianist Richard Wyands, bassist George Duvivier, and drummer Roy Haynes. Although Dolphy is too unique and skilled to be overshadowed in a setting such as this, Nelson holds his own. He contributed five of the six compositions (including "Screamin' the Blues," "The Meetin'," and "Alto-Itis") and effectively matches wits and creative ideas with Dolphy.

Dolphy also performed in key recordings by George Russell, Oliver Nelson, and Ornette Coleman. He also worked with Gunther Schuller, t Ken McIntyre and bassist Ron Carter. This album features Dolphy's fully developed avant-garde yet structured compositional style rooted in tradition Final months. After Out to Lunch! and an appearance on pianist/composer Andrew Hill's Blue Note album Point of Departure, Dolphy left for Europe with Charles Mingus' sextet in early 1964. Screamin' the Blues (New Jazz, 1961). The Blues and the Abstract Truth (Impulse!, 1961). Straight Ahead (New Jazz, 1961).

Album · 2014 · 8 Songs. Mama Lou (Bonus Track). Oliver Nelson & Eric Dolphy. Screamin' the Blues (Rudy Van Gelder Remaster).

Screamin' the Blues is an apt description of the soloists' approach on this 1960 session, here reissued as an RVG remaster, the first of three matching leader Oliver Nelson with avant-gardist Eric Dolphy. Although not as well-known as Nelson's masterpiece, Blues and the Abstract Truth (1961), the date is characterized, above all, by "generosity" on the part of all three principals, including the underrated trumpeter Richard Williams. Personnel: Oiver Nelson: tenor and alto saxophones; Eric Dolphy: alto saxophone and bass clarinet; Richard Williams: trumpet; Richard Wyands: piano; George Duvivier: bass; Roy Haynes: drums. Title: Screamin' the Blues Year Released: 2007 Record Label: Prestige Records.
