23 Sergei Prokofiev - Piano Concerto No. 1 in D flat major, Op. 10 Johann Sebastian Bach - Piano Concerto No. 1 in D minor, BWV 1052. Sviatoslav Richter - piano, Czech Philharmonic Orchestra, Prague Symphony Orchestra, conductors Karel Ančerl, Václav Talich. In 1950 Prague was the destination of the first-ever foreign trip of the then 35-year-old Russian genius pianist Sviatoslav Richter. He would subsequently visit the city on several more occasions. The recordings on this CD were made at the Rudolfinum within two weeks at the end of May and the beginning of June 1954.

The Piano Concerto No. 1 in B♭ minor, Op. 23, was composed by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky between November 1874 and February 1875. It was revised in the summer of 1879 and again in December 1888. The first version received heavy criticism from Nikolai Rubinstein, Tchaikovsky's desired pianist. Rubinstein later repudiated his previous accusations and became a fervent champion of the work. It is one of the most popular of Tchaikovsky's compositions and among the best known of all piano concertos.

Tchaikovsky: Piano Concerto No. 1 in B flat minor, Op. 23. 33:00. Czech Philharmonic Orchestra. I. II. Andante semplice. Within such a short time, Richter had mastered Tchaikovsky’s impassioned concerto in B minor, Prokofiev’s purely Neoclassical concerto in D flat major, as well as Bach’s paramount Baroque and timeless first piano concerto. The fact that the Russian composers Tchaikovsky and Prokofiev found an ideal interpreter in perhaps the greatest legend among 20th-century pianists appears entirely logical. Yet the superb and sensitive performance of Bach’s piano (originally harpsichord) concerto serves to complete the picture of Richter’s genius and versatility

Czech Philharmonic, Karel Ančerl, Sviatoslav Richter Piano Concerto No. 1 in C-Sharp Major, Op. 15,.

Richter recorded Tchaikovsky's first concerto in 1958 with Yevgeny Mravinsky and the Leningrad Philharmonic, and in 1962 with Herbert von Karajan and the Vienna Symphony. This 1954 recording has a freshness that the other two cannot match. Richter gives his virtuosity free rein, and the results are incredibly exciting. Richter recorded the Prokofiev first concerto only one other time, in 1952 with Kiril Kondrashin and the Moscow Youth Symphony. As great as that performance is (and Richter did seem more comfortable with Russian forces behind him), this one is better. His virtuosity is just as flashy, but perhaps more substantive in the work's outer sections, while the central Andante comes off as more deeply felt. Ancerl's Prague Symphony plays rings around Kondrashin's youth orchestra, making this reissue the clear winner. Concerto No. 1 in B flat minor for piano and orchestra, Op. 1.
