Blitzen Trapper is a Portland, Oregon-based experimental country/folk/rock band associated with Sub Pop Records, Vagrant Records and Lojinx. Formed in 2000, the band currently operates as a quintet, with Eric Earley (als/keyboard), Erik Menteer (guitar/keyboard), Brian Adrian Koch (ca), Michael Van Pelt (bass), and Marty Marquis (als/melodica). Blitzen Trapper self-released its first three albums.
VII (Blitzen Trapper album). VII was well received by critics. With each record, Earley’s writing grows more vivid, closer to the g realm of the Drive-By Truckers, Vic Chesnutt and Jason Molina at his most direct. Musically, Blitzen Trapper is less idiosyncratic but no less unique.
Indie rock veterans Blitzen Trapper's seventh full-length VII recalls their innovative work from albums like Wild Mountain Nation and Furr. However, none of the songs are developed into anything more than ear-pricking novelty. Blitzen Trapper is having a pretty good year. Now that they’re playing it safe, right down to the album title, there’s not much to dig into, much less plow through. Like the protagonist of Furr", they’ve forgone running with the wolves, and lost an awesome part of themselves in the process.

VII is Blitzen Trapper’s strongest album to date, with years of musical experimentation having come together in the band’s own mad-scientist brand of cosmic Americana. At the front is Earley, writing from the heart and from sharply recalled memories, stories that are colorful, bizarre and built to thrill, like those murky woods of Feel The Chill. vii.
