Ask Rufus is the platinum-selling fifth studio album by funk band Rufus (and their third album featuring singer Chaka Khan), released on the ABC Records label in 1977. The album spent three weeks atop the Billboard R&B Albums Chart in 1977. By 1977, Rufus and Chaka Khan, now a fragile yet still tight unit, were starting to drift in different directions. Recording sessions for this album were troublesome due to tensions between Khan and drummer Andre Fischer.

Rufus was an American funk band from Chicago, Illinois, best known for launching the career of lead singer Chaka Khan. They had several hits throughout their career, including "Tell Me Something Good", "Sweet Thing", "Do You Love What You Feel" and "Ain't Nobody". Rufus and Chaka Khan were one of the most popular and influential funk bands of the 1970s, with four consecutive number one R&B albums, ten Top 40 Pop Hits and five number one R&B singles, among other accolades.

This 1977 effort is the follow-up to 1975's Rufus Featuring Chaka Khan. Ask Rufus has the group doing more sophisticated and constantly challenging work with an accent on evocative ballads. The effort's lone dance track "At Midnight (My Love Will Lift You Up) has the band going for more subtlety. The jazzy "Close the Door" has a confident and gentle vocal from Khan and a beautiful string arrangement from Clare Fischer who offered them throughout this effort.

Ask Rufus was Rufus and Chaka Khan’s fifth album, an R&B Number One titled after the Popular Mechanics column that had previously given the band its name. The album witnessed the funk crew branching out, touching its slow jams with light jazz ( Everlasting Love ), offering a short, classically influenced interlude ( Slow Screw Against the Wall/A Flat Fry ), and ending on a striking orchestral ballad ( Egyptian Song ).

Though not entirely focused on Khan's talents - the band's artistic direction was led by singer and t Ron Stockert - Khan added something missing from the group, a diverse vocalist. Khan was able to perform both in lower and higher octaves and was equipped to singing the group's rockier numbers as she had singing slower ballads. The nineteen-year-old Khan was born Yvette Marie Stevens and changed her name to Chaka (which was a name given to her by a Yoruba Baba at 13 years old which means "Fire")
