I worked on this album through 2007. I think this is the perfect soundtrack to any Hip-Hop head going to South East Asia. It reflects all the different sides of those countries: Raw, sad, culturally rich, amusing, kitsch and romantic. All proceeds from the sale of this album will be donated to 'La Goutte d'Eau' association (ww. a-goutte-deau. com) to help their humanitarian operations for Vietnamese people. Mastered @ LFE Studio, Paris.

Listen free to Onra – Chinoiseries (Introduction, The Anthem and more). Onra started this project in August 2006, freshly returned from a trip to Vietnam, the land of his ancesters. As a vinyl junkie, he couldn't come back to France without bringing back some wax. After hours spent riding on a motorbike through the streets of Saigon, a taxi finally helped him find some Asian records - he almost felt like an explorer discovering a forgotten treasure.

Album · 2008 · 32 Songs. He returned with a stack of old vinyl he found in flea markets. The first entry in his Chinoiseries series chops up those records into 32 dusty, lovingly constructed boom-bap beats: The dramatic orchestral stabs of The Anthem ring with an Asian influence, while the tight, grotty loops on tracks like Last Tango in Saigon are reminiscent of the work of beatmakers like Madlib and J Dilla.

With Chinoiseries, Onra has managed to capture some of the old romanticism associated with travelling to an extent I have not heard since The Avalanches’ ‘Since I Left You’. It really is a unique achievement; the album transports you to places you never thought hip-hop could take you to. For all of Chinoiseries strengths though, I do have one or two minor issues with the album. Of all main influences to pick from, Onra could certainly do worse than J Dilla, however there are times when you may find yourself thinking you’re listening to a dodgy Chinese bootleg of Donuts.

The third volume of Onra's Chinoiseries will land on March 10th. The first Chinoiseries album came out in 2007 with a simple manifesto: the French producer, real name Arnaud Bernard, digs through old Chinese vinyl and crafts hip-hop instrumentals from the samples. A follow-up hit the shelves in 2011, and now the third and final instalment in the trilogy is set for release this spring. Chinoiseries Pt. 3, which features 32 tracks, was made using an MPC. Like the last two, the release is being handled by Irish label All City.

Notes

I started this project August 2006, when i got back from a trip to Viet Nam, the land of my grandparents. As a vinyl junkie, i really couldn't come back to France without bringing back some wax. After hours spent riding on a motorbike in Saigon streets, a taxi finally helped me find some Asian records.

I almost felt like an explorer discovering a forgotten treasure. I bought 30 vinyls, most of them in poor condition, back to the crib, and started making beats with some material i wasn't used to.

I worked on this album through 2007. I think this is the perfect soundtrack to any Hip-Hop head going to South East Asia. It reflects all the different sides of those countries: Raw, sad, culturally rich, amusing, kitsch and romantic.
