In addition, Dolphy's album Far Cry recorded for Prestige features Little on five tunes (one of which, "Serene", was not included on the original LP release). Dolphy and Little also co-led a quintet at the Five Spot during 1961. The rhythm section consisted of Richard Davis, Mal Waldron and Ed Blackwell. One night was documented and has been released on three volumes of At the Five Spot as well as the compilation Here and There. In addition, both Dolphy and Little backed Abbey Lincoln on her album Straight Ahead and played on Max Roach's Percussion Bitter Sweet. Recorded live at the Five Spot with pianist Mal Waldron, bassist Richard Davis, and drummer Ed Blackwell, this CD reissue consists of two fairly lengthy renditions of Eric Dolphy compositions: "Number Eight" and "Booker's Waltz.
The Eric Dolphy-Booker Little quintet of 1961 is one of the most tantalizing "what ifs" off jazz history. Beyond the prodigiously gifted and ill-starred front line, the rhythm section was incredible - Mal Waldron, Richard Davis, and Ed Blackwell, each a major voice in the emerging jazz avant-garde. Leadership seems to have been cooperative (Dolphy, Little, and Waldron all contributed tunes to the book) and warm fellow-feeling radiates from the grooves, even as the music explores territories of extreme dissonance and rhythmic instability. The two tracks making up MEMORIAL ALBUM get us back to business (though they were actually recorded earlier in the gig), with Dolphy on alto for his intense, puzzlingly titled "Number Eight (Potsa Lotsa)" and touches of evident under-rehearsal failing to detract from Little's beguiling "Booker's Waltz.
Far Cry is a jazz album by musician Eric Dolphy with trumpeter Booker Little, originally released in 1962 on New Jazz, a subsidiary of the Prestige label. Featuring their co-led quintet, it is one of the few studio recordings of their partnership. It is also one of the earliest appearances of bassist Ron Carter on record. Dolphy took part in Ornette Coleman's Free Jazz session before recording this album on the same day.
