There have been other magnificent performances of Richard Strauss' Eine Alpensinfonie - Böhm's, Karajan's, Haitink's, and Previn's leap immediately to mind - but none has ever surpassed this performance by Rudolf Kempe and the Royal Philharmonic for sheer aural opulence. Taped in 1966 by producer Charles Gerhardt for Reader's Digest records, the stereo sound here is ravishingly beautiful with giddy highs, abysmal lows, endless depths, and staggering immediacy. Coupled with Alan Civil's robust interpretation of Strauss' first Horn Concerto, this Alpensinfonie deserves to be heard by anyone who enjoys the work or the composer.

Eine Alpensinfonie Op. 64 (An Alpine Symphony).
An Alpine Symphony (Eine Alpensinfonie), Op. 64, is a tone poem for a very large orchestra written by German composer Richard Strauss in 1915. It is one of Strauss's largest non-operatic works; the score calls for about 125 players and a typical performance usually lasts around 50 minutes. The program of An Alpine Symphony depicts the experiences of eleven hours (from daybreak just before dawn to the following nightfall) spent climbing an Alpine mountain.
Eine Alpensinfonie Horn . .has been added to your Cart. 2. Horn Concerto No. 11 (TrV 117): 2. Andante. 11 (TrV 117): 3. Rondo (Allegro). The German composer and conductor Richard Strauss (1864-1949) began writing An Alpine Symphony in 1911 and completed it several years later. It was the last of his big-scale symphonic tone poems, the composer spending his final thirty-odd years writing other kinds of music, songs, and, of course, opera. I have read that Strauss came to write his Alpine Symphony after viewing the Bavarian mountains behind his home, the mountains he used to climb and enjoy in his youth. Is there anything I truly disliked about the album? Well, yes, but it's almost too trivial to mention. I don't like the sepia-tinged portrait of the conductor on the Testament cover.
