Lauritz Melchior was the first of the great Wagnerian heldentenors (heroic tenors) to sing on records, and he was the first operatic tenor to sing on radio. One can only imagine what a legacy was lost when he and his wife fled Germany in 1939; his home there was subsequently occupied and looted by both German and Russian soldiers and a collection of unpublished recordings was used for target practice.

This is an audio and video discography of Tristan und Isolde, an opera by Richard Wagner which was first performed on 10 June 1865 in Munich. Tristan und Isolde has a long recorded history. In the years before World War II, Kirsten Flagstad and Lauritz Melchior were considered to be the prime interpreters of the lead roles, and mono recordings exist of this pair in a number of live performances led by conductors such as Thomas Beecham, Fritz Reiner, Artur Bodanzky and Erich Leinsdorf.

Helen Traubel & Lauritz Melchior Sing Wagner. During the 1940s, Helen Traubel and Lauritz Melchior ruled the Wagnerian roost on American opera stages. In the complete first scene from Act 3 of Tristan und Isolde, the matchless Melchior characterizes the protagonist's descent into delirium via purely vocal means, with no enacting or barking. True, his baritonal timbre boasted more vibrance and roundness in the live 1936 Covent Garden Tristan on VAI.

American soprano Helen Traubel (1899-1972) was part of the golden age of Wagnerian singing at the Met in the 1940s. After Kirsten Flagstad returned to Norway in the spring of 1941 the burden of the heaviest Wagnerian roles (Brunnhilde and Isolde) fell on Traubel's shoulders. Her warm, burnished and seamless soprano met the challenge eagerly, and ensured that Wagner remained a major draw at the Met during the war and immediately afterwards
