Gordon Pym by Edgar Allan Poe. Introductory Note.In the preface, written by . Pym in July 1838 in New York, the author writes that, having recently returned to America after several months away, he was urged by some gentlemen to write up his remarkable narrative. He worries that since he did not keep a diary he would not be able to recall everything and might exaggerate or fictionalize what occurred. When the book is published, Pym is surprised that many people assume it is true; the facts of the narrative seemed to carry their authenticity within them.

By Edgar Allan Poe. Follows the story of Arthur Gordon Pym, who stows away on the whaling ship, Grampus  . MY name is Arthur Gordon Pym. My father was a respectable trader in sea-stores at Nantucket, where I was born. My maternal grandfather was an attorney in good practice. He was fortunate in every thing, and had speculated very successfully in stocks of the Edgarton New Bank, as it was formerly called. By these and other means he had managed to lay by a tolerable sum of money. He was more attached to myself, I believe, than to any other person in the world, and I expected to inherit the most of his property at his death.

Arthur Gordon Pym lives on Nantucket, a whaling and fishing island, and his best friend, Augustus, is the son of a whaling ship captain. The two boys drunkenly sail out on Pym’s little boat, Ariel, on Augustus’s impulse. They get caught in a storm, and Augustus passes out drunk. But Augustus stops coming, and Pym runs out of water in the stuffy, cramped hold. Pym is delirious, but finds a letter written in blood, warning him to remain hidden for the sake of his life. Finally, Augustus arrives. Country. Arthur Gordon Pym was born on the island of Nantucket, famous for its fishing harbor and whaling. His best friend, Augustus Barnard, is the son of the captain of a whaling ship. One night, the two boys become drunk and decide, on Augustus's whim, to take advantage of the breeze and sail out on Pym's sailboat, the Ariel. Interpreted this way, the protagonist is actually sailing away from himself, or his ego. The middle name of "Gordon", in replacing Poe's connection to the Allan family, was turned into a reference to George Gordon Byron, a poet whom Poe deeply admired. The scene where Pym disguises himself from his grandfather while noting that he intends to inherit wealth

The tale was never published completely in Poe’s lifetime, being briefly serialized in the Southern Literary Messenger, though never completed. It was an attempt of Poe’s to achieve some acclaim as well as garner some profit from his writings, as his short fiction was not selling well at the time of the novels writing. Poe draws significantly on certain archaic and contemporary theories of his time to construct a realistic narrative of science, though, certain inaccuracies are still made, similar to his prose poem Eureka. The tale is also l, Poe taking from his experiences.

Augustus’s father is a sea captain. A voyage is in the offing and Augustus contrives to enable Pym to stow away. He was a brilliantly-dark author of spectacular fiction. This novel is simply not that. And the fact that he knew The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym was, in his own words, "a very silly book", makes me respect him all the more. In summation: I hate that I finished this one, but at least my buddy Thomas finally picked a stinker. I thought he'd never break my streak of choosing truly crappy literature, but he came through for me this time.
