Call your band The Neighbourhood Strange and most people with any musical nous will suss out that you’re not going to be a dubstep posse or a punk band, and needless to say the Wiltshire five-piece live up to their name. The band comprises Marcus on vocals and guitar, Mark on lead guitar, Bob on organ, Dazman on bass, and Will on drums. They’ve all played in various other bands, the one of most note being Marcus and Bob in The Nuthins, a Salisbury garage band from the ’90s. They’ve got their debut out now, as a download of course but more pleasingly on 7” vinyl too in a splendidly hefty cardboard sleeve (but they’re docked a house point for the lack of coloured vinyl). The eponymous A Side leads with booming drums and sneering vocals with a guitar riff that sounds like a razorblade slicing through a kaftan as the woozy keyboard swirls around the riff. This isn’t House at Pooh Corner psychedelia, sure there’s a psyche vibe to the tune, but it’s lean, mean and is here to kick your arse. B Side 'Wytches Sky' is a broody keyboard led slice of menace with a mercurial guitar slicing in and out of the keyboard wash that breaks out in to an understated subtle guitar solo over some forceful bass. The tracks for the single were recorded at The Crow’s Nest Studio in Hackney with Olly (drummer from The Duke Spirit) engineering. That initial session produced five tracks with two cuts selected for the debut single. The Wiltshire-based band have just released their debut single (of course their record label is called £.s.d. Records, sorry LSD) and it’s a bit of a banger. LSD Records itself is a small independent record shop in Wilton just outside of Salisbury, they heard the five tracks and decided the tracks were so good that they started a label and make the tunes their first release. The band have recorded another session of six tracks which will be mixed sometime over the next couple of months. Marcus reports: “The sound on the latest session seems to have a lot more depth to it as we discover our sound as a band. Probably fair to say it's a lot moodier but still has the energy that we find very important to our sound. We are currently writing new material and hoping to be playing lots of gigs this year with the single as the catalyst.”Buy the vinyl from the band here here
