Stephen Encinas - Lypso Illusion. 5 years ago 5 years ago. Stephen Encinas. I don't own the rights to this song and will take down if requested. Seems a little quiet over here.

1. Disco Illusion 6:47 2. Lypso Illusion 5:01. Tish Hinojosa - After The Fair (2013). John Anderson - Essential (2019). Elly Ney - Elly Ney: The Complete Brunswick & Electrola Solo 78-RPM recordings (2019).

For many this is the ultimate Disco Illusion; a record that should have been epoch making in its day, something that would have been a staple for David Mancuso, Larry Levan & Ron Hardy had it ever gotten distribution when it was originally released 34 years ago. Somehow time passed it by and it was only re-discovered in a warehouse in Trinidad last year. Since then it has been gaining momentum fast, with DJ support from Moodymann, MCDE, Floating Points & Kon, as well as original copies selling for four-digit sums. Part of the illusion is in the structure of the record.

  • Neol
This is incredible. Serious damage on the dancefloor. One more word.
  • Kiaile
The vocals are not great? Jesus....Amazing 12 all round A-side all day
  • Breder
depends on the day! all around killer 12" . .
  • Ka
2000 euros, is this for real??? wanna say LOL (and one more word)

The sound quality of a clip I heard from a mint copy of the original Caribbean pressing had clicks and pops, noticeable hiss and crackle in a few places, which will sound exponentially worse on my high-end system. Spending big $$$$ on a record of mediocre-to-poor manufacturing quality that does not play cleanly from start-to-finish is foolish. Buy the Canadian repress instead, which plays cleanly.
the original pressing sounds great actually. sure, it helps if you have a clean copy, but that goes for any record. 45 RPM and very loud!
  • Zodama
Caribbean pressings are not known to be sonically great. Plus, the song itself was not exactly mixed well, so there's that.
  • SlingFire
NY_Club_Classics Who would pay $$$$ for a record without knowing what condition it is in? You ask for a sound clip first.
  • Visonima
pookeyblow NY_Club_Classics You heard a clip so you're just assuming it's a bad pressing? LOL. Get out of here. I have the original. I got it when they found the 14 or so copies and it was unplayed. Sounds better than the re-issue IMO. It's perfect. The clip sounded noisy, consistent with Caribbean pressings. If I hear crackle, clicks and pops on a clip, it will sound exponentially worse on my system. I am not paying big $$$$ to find out the hard way :-)

The cord change ruins this, shame nice Roy Ayers style bass your money and donate it to a worthy cause
  • Ceck
2 things: First off, learn how to spell. It's "chords", not "cords"...secondly...what on earth are you talking about?
  • Agarus
Stephen_Encinas I love you Stephen. This is one of my favorite songs ever!!
  • Thetalen
That's very unkind. We all have different things we look for in music so to each his own. If you don't like it, I respect that, just say you don't and move on ... cheers
  • Kecq
The vinyl quality and pressing quality of Caribbean records in general is mediocre-to-poor. Even brand new copies of a given title will have vinyl impurities and manufacturing defects that result in clicks, pops and crackle in places. Sometimes, very bad and in many places throughout the track. There are exceptions, where you get a few reasonably clean pressings out of an overall batch. I have a couple of very clean original thick vinyl deep groove pressings of Ain't No Stopping Us Now by Risco Connection that sound great. So, before spending big bucks on an original Caribbean pressing, you should inspect it carefully and play it to evaluate the vinyl, sound and pressing quality.
  • Faehn
Repress up at Redeye.
  • Isha
I'd like the original please! Thank you very much !
  • Zacki
I got it. You can make me an offer if you want.
  • Yllk
Difficult to tell without having the original to hand, but this latest repress sounds pretty heavily eq'd? Still great tracks just hoping the repress is true to the original...
yeah, that's exactly how the latest repress sounds. ICE, please don't do this on future reissues, it's what mixers are for : )
  • Windbearer
Not sure about the latest repress, but the first repress is EQed different than the original. More lows and less highs. I prefer the original.
  • Ungall
I hope the girl stopped singing since. . . .
  • IGOT
why? most rock from the 70s had way worse vocalists. .
  • Trex
??? She sounds fine to me. Better than 99% of vocalists on the radio today.
  • Boraston
New reissue is coming in four weeks. Don't waste your money....
  • Minnai
Great news. What label is the re-issue going to be on?
  • Thordira
I'm really looking for it as well if you have any information...
  • Dancing Lion
Do you know something more about it? Only on Invisible City or a normal release?
  • Faell
Nice inst - listening now - nutty keys
  • FreandlyMan
The 'wobbly' keys remind me of the intro to Roy Ayers 'Programmed For Love' - Mtume jam...
  • Diredefender
Decent tune but I've got better £10 joints, sh'mon..............FFS.......
  • Adorardana
Vocal side is great.. Thy instrumental on the flip is even better.
  • I love Mercedes
Don't you just love to way music works. This guy has recorded just one record, not written, nor produced, nor played on one other single record out there, other than having a small backing singer role on one other rarity from the same set of musicians (Michael Boothman). Its a recurring theme, every now and then someone pops out of nowhere and makes one piece of outstanding music that sets the collecting community alight, then disappears, without a trace. I love the way that works and i wonder what happened to Stephen Encinas and why he didn't do's to all the one offs!
  • Uris
Oh yeah , I forget there is another Stephen Ecinas tune which is a killer, Music in me
  • Morlunn
Stephen still lives in Trinidad but as far as I know this was a one off for him as his other records are not like this. Similar to Charmaine Forde who is now in the US doing radio , Michael Boothman lives in Trinidad and is still active in the jazz scene. Michael had an LP out tale end of the 70s which isnt bad and fairly easy to pick up (I forget the name though). I discovered the Charmain Forde and Michael Boothman record in 2004 and bought 12 copies from Rhyners. I couldn't give the record away (I gave a few away actually) as no big name DJ had picked it up and it was just an unknown. A few years ago I found one of the last spares and put it up on Discogs for £60 as a joke, the joke was on me as it was sold in 30 seconds. Still I was happy some one got a deal, I still have my own copy.
  • Adokelv
This is one of the best disco 12"s I've ever heard... unbelievable on both sides. . . Top recommendation!!
  • Kagda
sell me it haha
