The Carpenters garnered worldwide commercial success, scoring big hits mainly in the first half of the 1970s. RIAA-certified sales of their records (albums, singles and videos) have been estimated at around 3. million units. In the United Kingdom, they are ranked as the seventh top-selling albums artist on the official record chart of the 1970s. They have also been the third-best-selling international music act in the Japanese market, only behind Mariah Carey. Seishun no Kagayaki: The Best of (22 Hits of the Carpenters) (Japan only). Released: November 10, 1995. Label: A&M, Polydor Japan.

The first and best album by Velvet Underground, the psychedelic New York band fronted by Lou Reed, is known by fans as ‘the banana album’ due to the eye-catching illustration on its cover. This fruity drawing was the work of Pop Art icon Andy Warhol, who happened to be the group’s manager, while the cover was designed by Acy R. Lehman. The use of obscenity, cast in the kind of cut-out lettering commonly associated with criminal ransom notes, was shocking to audiences of the time. The effect was heightened by the sleeve's lurid colour palette, which was based on a series of stickers distributed by the Situationalist political movement (the originals read: ‘This Store Welcomes Shoplifters’). The use of 'bollocks' (a term in British English that means both 'nonsense' and 'testicles') led to a police raid on a Virgin record store that stocked the record.

The album includes 30 tracks over two albums and features over 20 collaborators, almost as if presenting a modern day Drunken Tiger crew (which includes a wide array of artists, like Yoonmirae and BTS’s RM). The album knows where it comes from and the weightiness it deserves as a send-off for Drunken Tiger. One of the most innovative acts in the K-pop world, SHINee returned this year with their 10th anniversary Story of Light EP album series, concluding it with this compilation LP. Full of punchy, retro-leaning electro-pop and atmospheric R&B tracks, there’s a sense of nostalgia served up by the group’s impassioned vocals as the members lean into the sort of expressive pop they’ve led over the past decade.

Sia, ‘1000 Forms of Fear’. Featuring nightmarish levels of romantic codependency set to astoundingly dreamy orchestrations, Lana Del Rey's best album celebrates the poisonous power of the unsettlingly soothing lullaby. Sweet and creepy, Ultraviolence pushes the Stepford Wives vibe of 2012's Born to Die to the hilt while refining its vertiginous beauty.

20) Annihilator – Alice In Hell (Roadrunner, 1989). One of the finest metal guitarists of all time, Jeff Waters was always destined for greatness, but this precocious debut album was, if we’re honest, taking the piss. 19) Sabbat – History Of A Time To Come (Noise, 1988). While many of their UK peers simply emulated their cousins from across the Atlantic, Sabbat created their own world of paganised poetry and eccentric riffing, resulting in a debut album that eschewed the rule book in favour of a fiercely individual take on the thrash formula. An underground phenomenon, perhaps, but an album that sent ripples of inspiration through the metal world. 18) Overkill – The Years Of Decay (Atlantic, 1989).

Cyber Stockholm Syndrome pulps the past 20 years of hooks into a hyper-compressed dopamine hit, much like those dispensed by the protagonist’s phone. And 10-20-40 sends Sawayama careening down a synthwave highway, chased by a shamelessly processed guitar solo. Listen: Rina Sawayama, Cyber Stockholm Syndrome. The rest of the album dwells in the spaces in between, which turn out to be gorgeous. Listen: Goldfrapp, Anymore.
