Roots is Curtis Mayfield's visionary album, a landmark creation every bit as compelling and far-reaching in its musical and extra-musical goals as Marvin Gaye's contemporary What's Goin' On. Opening on the hit "Get Down," the album soars on some of the sweetest and most eloquent - yet driving - soul sounds heard up to that time.

Curtis is the debut album by American soul musician Curtis Mayfield, released in September 1970. Produced by Mayfield, it was released on his own label Curtom Records. The musical styles of Curtis moved further away from the pop-soul sounds of Mayfield's previous group The Impressions and featured more of a funk and ed sound. The album's subject matter incorporates political and social concerns of the time.

Roots Hi Horse Records 2009. Perhaps this was a conscious move from Mayfield, after all the album is called 'Roots. And if he is looking back, then we are treated to nods toward the blues 'Now You're Gone' (albeit with an interesting string arrangement and his full horn-sound) and even The Impressions, on my favourite piece on the album, 'We Got to Have Piece. Lifted as a single, it brings everything together so well, closing with a sax solo over a fade. It's very easy to look back on an artist's oeuvre, from forty years after, and pick out highlights

Roots is Curtis Mayfield’s second studio album, released in October 1971. The album became a commercial success as well, hitting the slot on Billboard’s Top R&B Albums chart. Producers Curtis Mayfield. Writers Curtis Mayfield

It's album that encourages social awareness as much as it makes you want to get up and dance. Peppers of 70's soul. However, with Roots, Mayfield lays everything on the table. No other album could give you the sweet melody of Stevie Wonder and yet have a more righteous tone than Marvin Gaye. This album is Curtis, the artist, producer, and activist at his best. The vocals are high and are delivered in his trademark voice that almost sounds like a whisper. With them Mayfield paints the picture of life after the Civil Rights Act. This was key when experimenting with this brand of funk.

Album · 1971 · 11 Songs. 1971's Roots is a perfect case in point. It's a compelling suite of songs that explore Mayfield's interests in socio-political issues, and there's a strong feel for romance in the sound. Horns, strings, guitars, keyboards, and complex percussion outline the landscapes that have Mayfield seeking equality for people everywhere
