The solos are fresh and, even if no real surprises occur, the enthusiasm and joy of this music makes it recommended even to Monk collectors who already have most of his recordings.

Thelonious Monk In Tokyo is a bop music live album recording by THELONIOUS MONK released in 1978 on CD, LP/Vinyl and/or cassette. THELONIOUS MONK- Tokyo Concerts Vo. Live in Japan CD (1963 Charlie Rouse).

Rare live material by Monk – recorded in Tokyo in 1963, and featuring the classic Columbia quartet with Charlie Rouse on tenor, Butch Warren on bass, and Frankie Dunlop on drums. Rouse is especially wonderful, and he gets a lot of freedom on the record to work out these complicated solos. LP, Vinyl record album.

First, it is bass heavy, and I think that has something to do with the fidelity of the recording and the positioning of the microphones.
