Hands Down ‎(CD, Album). Tappan Zee Records, CBS/Sony. Hands Down ‎(LP, Album, Gat). Janus" is one of his best works. The first minute, especially, is simply awesome. Heavy use of jazz chords like minor and major 7s do reveal the era that this was made, to some extent, but they work so well to give the song some robust emotion. For me the best track is Mike Lawrence's haunting "Roberta. James's solo piano during the first three minutes is simply spine-tingling. I sort of wish the track ended at that point, but it moves to a somewhat overproduced piece. But I can't complain too much.

He's really the go-to guy for innovative and thought provoking pieces. My two personal favourites though are both ballads and both written by James; "Janus", featuring tenor sax by Eddie Daniels and the beautiful acoustic piano-led "Roberta" with its solo trumpet by Mike Lawrence and sweeping orchestral arrangements. Also worth a mention is the bass work by James's longtime collaborator, Gary King. He sounds so liquid in places, I always used to think he played a fretless. The other two tunes - "Spunky", which opens the album and "It's Only Me", which closes it - are both a lot of fun and here's where you'll find the electronica I referred to at the top. I feel they've aged well though and James's clever improvisations make it clear that while this might not be jazz in its purest sense, it's still very much jazz.

Throughout the track, Bob dives into various melodies played exceptionally funkily. Janus: This starts side B and is completely different from the A-side opener. This track focuses on Bob's slow and smooth piano playing. It is more like elevator music here, still enjoyable but definitely one of the weakest tracks on the album. Roberta: This is quite similar to Janus in terms of pacing, but adds an orchestra and trumpet with occasional hits from the bass.
