Je t'aim. oi non plus" (French for "I love yo. either do I") is a 1967 song written by Serge Gainsbourg for Brigitte Bardot. In 1969, Gainsbourg recorded the best known version with Jane Birkin. The duet reached number one in the UK, and number two in Ireland, but was banned in several countries due to its overtly sexual content. In 1976, Gainsbourg directed Birkin in an erotic film of the same name.

Andrew Birkin (brother to Jane) recounts years of memories with his beloved sister and her beau in his new photo book. Which is why your album hasn't just been published by Taschen. But aside from the beautiful photos-which, if you're a Birkin/Gainsbourg fangirl, are a real feast for the eyes-the juicy stuff is hidden in a little stapled booklet stuffed in with the singles and film strips (and a poster, sheet of stickers, and large embroidered patch-but that's neither here nor there), in which Andrew recounts those . When Jane played the sexually explicit song for her brother, he secretly made a cassette copy and took it with him to a deserted island off the coast of England, along with a bag of weed and his French girlfriend.

Gainsbourg was a complicated guy, outwardly arrogant and lecherous, but also introverted and wildly intelligent. He understood pop music on a very basic, almost instinctual level, what worked and what didn't, and what could cause a sensation. He was an inveterate experimenter, exploring ways to marry the French chanson to jazz, African music, exotica, reggae, electronic music, funk, and British art-rock (check his Cannabis soundtrack). And he must have known he had something sensational on his hands with "Je T'aime". Where the Bardot version was pillowy, her vocal almost too humid, Birkin brings to it a playfulness that balances Gainsbourg's debauched deadpan. If you haven't heard it, it goes basically like this: She says she loves him, he enigmatically responds "neither do I," they matter-of-factly describe the rhythm of sex, and she very convincingly simulates a climax.
