On the Line (Jenny Lewis album). On the Line is the fourth studio album by American singer-songwriter Jenny Lewis. The album was released on March 22, 2019, by Warner Bros.
Not long into her fourth solo album, On the Line, Jenny Lewis introduces a narcoleptic poet from Duluth, with whom she spars over everything from Elliott Smith to grenadine; a father who used to sing a little ditty about all the years he threw away on heroin; an East Side girl called Caroline, to whom a lover is bitterly lost. There has always been a certain amount of skepticism surrounding Lewis’ more overt attempts at hit-making (see: 2007’s Under the Blacklight), and part of that stems from her uncanny ability to do both: write classic pop songs that will forever lodge themselves into your brain and pepper them with lyrics (and aesthetic markers like an emo sensibility or a. chintzy drum machine) that are unshakeable in their specificity and proximity to your own concerns. Half just doesn’t seem enough, especially since Lewis gives it all in the album’s best moments.
Jennifer Diane Lewis (born January 8, 1976) is an American singer-songwriter, musician, and actress. She was the lead singer and rhythm guitarist for the indie rock band Rilo Kiley. Lewis gained prominence in the 1980s as a child actress, appearing in the films Troop Beverly Hills (1989) and The Wizard (1989) and the television series Brooklyn Bridge (1991–93).
Jenny Lewis no longer seems a cipher on On the Line"; the singer has warmed to the possibility that the personal can still be poetic. Early on in her new record, Jenny Lewis warns us that Mercury’s retrograde wrath is far from over. Her cautionary words form the conceit of Wasted Youth, a lament dressed in melody and charm. With the prospect of planetary bad luck looming, Lewis spends the chorus listing some of the ways in which we doom ourselves. Be it the poppy (and likely the nefarious substances for which it is often cultivated) or the blister-inducing high of Candy Crush, our options for self-destruction are limitless.
Listen now. Last but certainly not least, several new dates in support of On The Line have been announced. In addition to newly added headline performances, Jenny will be supporting Death Cab For Cutie on select dates in June-plus a performance on Live From Here with Chris Thile. I feel like I’m living the Laurel Canyon version of the movie Big, Jenny Lewis says, as she fires up her pinball machine and puts on a hot pink trucker cap that reads BEST FRIENDS in black lettering. The comparison to the 1988 Tom Hanks film - in which a seventh-grader wakes up one day in the body of a 30-year-old man - feels apt when it comes to her décor.
Jenny Lewis grew up in Las Vegas, where her parents had their own Sonny and Cher tribute act together. Her dad, who passed away in 2010, left their family home when she was three years old. Her mum worked as a waitress, and it was hard for the family make ends meet, until Lewis was plucked out of her pre-school by an acting agent. If Lewis’ previous album ‘The Voyager’ was an exploration of her fractured relationship with her father, ‘On the Line’ is surely dedicated to growing closer to her mother again. On ‘Little White Dove’, we find Lewis and her mother in hospital together; sterile floor numbers making way for a surreal, heavenly fleet of angelic doctors. Wasted Youth’, meanwhile, masks bitter regret beneath peppy, plunking piano.

The . singer-songwriter’s career began as a child actor - her filmography includes the ‘80s kid classics The Wizard and Troop Beverly Hills - and slowly shifted gears as she became disillusioned with the business and her home life upon discovering that her mother had been skimming money from her earnings for drugs.
