Live/Dead is the first official live album released by the rock band Grateful Dead. Recorded over a series of concerts in early 1969 and released later the same year, it was the first live rock album to use 16-track recording.

Grateful Dead is an album by rock band the Grateful Dead. Released in October 1971 on Warner Bros. Records, it is their second live double album. Although published without a title, it is generally known by the names Skull and Roses (due to its iconic cover art) and Skull Fuck (the name the band originally wanted to give to the album, which was rejected by the record company).

Unlike Live/Dead, the album contained several lead and background vocal overdubs. For the three new original compositions ("Bertha", "Playing in the Band", and "Wharf Rat"), the band invited Jerry Garcia associate Merl Saunders to overdub organ parts. This made the organ playing of Saunders more prominent than that of Pigpen, whose contributions tend to be buried in the mix.

I originally bought this album on vinyl back in the 70s. The original vinyl release was a two-album set, which had some awkward breaks at the ends of each side of the record. It was tough to get any real continuity when you had to turn over the record every 20 minutes or so.

Unlike Live/Dead, the album contained several lead and background vocal overdubs. Though the album has been known by the sobriquet "Skull & Roses", the original vertical gatefold cover unfolds to reveal the entire skeleton. The graphic became one of the images most associated with the band. Opening track "Bertha" fades in on the original version of the album, in semblance of entering the performance space.

The Grateful Dead have often been likened to the sonic equivalent of an acid trip. Rich sound, soothing, and an overall sense of euphoric emotion. Live/Dead thoroughly supports that statement. Dark Star alone, being clocked in at twenty three minutes, and seven seconds, distorts your sense of time enough to the point where you feel as if you have been listening to an hour long guitar solo. However, that does not make Live/Dead a tedious album, to any extent.

An excellent production. Excellent sound /excellent presentation. I love it!

Note: on this one seems no noise reduction has been applied, it's quite hissy. I guess/hope it was due to the fact original master tapes were used without further processing.
