After taking musique concrete to another level, Reich decided to try to make similar strides with instrumental music. The two other pieces here, "Piano Phase" and "Clapping Music," represent this new direction in his work. Re-recorded here in 1986 and 1987, their intricate, layered patterns should be familiar to fans of another one of Reich's masterpieces, "Music for 18 Musicians. Early Works is a must-have introduction for anyone interested in the roots of minimalist music.
Album · 1987 · 5 Songs. Early Works Steve Reich. Clapping Music (1972). Steve Reich & Russ Hartenberger. Though Steve Reich's trailblazing minimalist compositions have had a huge impact on everything from rock to electronica, Reich didn't really reach an audience beyond the avant-garde cognoscenti until the '70s. The pieces collected here from his early career-mostly from the '60s-eventually became influential, but they remained a kind of buried treasure for years. As with most great minimalism, the simplicity of these compositions is simultaneously disarming and devastating

Reich's works are pretty amazing, at least to me. These early works show how he moved from playing tape loops against each other to capturing the same phenomena with musical instruments. Piano Phase is the embodiment of this and really helps put the rest of his work in context. Two of the pieces, the most talked about of his early works, were created by looping and relooping uttered speech, altering speed so that the original spoken phrases transform into a blur of sound, rising in pitch to an unvoiced whir. As it continues, you realize it isn't just sound. It's another way to visualize music.
Steve Reich: Music for Mallet Instruments, Voices & Organ; Music for Pieces of Wood; Sextet. Steve Reich: Music for Mallet Instruments, Voices & Organ; Music for Pieces of Wood; Sextet. In 1998 Steve wrote Triple Quartet. How many works are there that have the power to begin a program, end a program or conclude the first half? The driving, vital pulses of the outer movements of Triple Quartet frame the Perotin-inspired middle movement. Bartok, Schnittke and maybe even klezmer music are heard as influences but the voice is unmistakably Steve's as he stretches his harmonic realm.
