Jerry Butler album cover. 1959 Jerry Butler Esquire. 1960 He Will Break Your Heart. 1977 Suite for a Single Girl. 1977 Thelma and Jerry. Recorded on Veejay Records label, the song was a huge hit and became the groups first single to go gold. Soon afterwards, in 1959 Butler was tagged The Iceman by a radio announcer in Philadelphia. Butler earned the name because of his smooth and effortless style. The Impressions gave Jerry Butler the beginning he needed to launch a career of his own in the music industry (iMusic and Soul Patrol). The second part of Butler’s career began in 1960, with his first solo hit titled He Will Break Your Heart. This led to a number of hits for Butler, and even a couple of successful duets.

Jerry Butler Curtis Mayfield (deceased) Nate Evans Arthur Brooks (deceased) Richard Brooks Leroy Hutson Ralph Johnson (deceased) Vandy Hampton (deceased) Willie Kitchens Reggie Torian (deceased). The Impressions were an American music group originally formed in 1958  . Jerry Butler and Curtis Mayfield met while singing in the same Chicago church choir. After singing in a number of local gospel groups, the two of them joined a doo-wop group called "The Roosters" in 1957, whose members included Chattanooga, Tennessee natives Sam Gooden, Richard Brooks, and his brother Arthur Brooks. It was the title cut from the album of the same name, which also reached the Top 10 on both charts.

Butler co-wrote the song "For Your Precious Love" (which is ranked No. 327 on the Rolling Stone magazine's list of The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time) and wanted to record a disc. Looking for recording studios, the Impressions (the original members of which were Butler, Curtis Mayfield, Sam Gooden, Fred Cash - who left early on, and later returned - and brothers Arthur and Richard Brooks), auditioned for Chess Records and Vee-Jay Records Tony Orlando and Dawn revived "He Will Break Your Heart" in 1975, with a new title, "He Don't Love You (Like I Love You)", and it was more successful than Butler's original, going to number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart.
