He first hit with "Gentle on My Mind," a John Hartford tune that was a minor success upon its first release in 1967. That was followed by Jimmy Webb's "By the Time I Get to Phoenix," Campbell's breakthrough, and continued with "I Wanna Live," "Dreams of the Everyday Housewife," and perhaps Campbell's most fully realized song, the Webb-written "Wichita Lineman.

Many of Rhinestone Cowboy's lyrical themes reflected Campbell's own life at the time, both personally and professionally.
