Rufus is the debut album by American R&B and funk band Rufus, released on the ABC Records label in 1973 fronted by singers Chaka Khan and Ron Stockert. The album is notable for an upbeat rock/soul sound that would be replaced by a more heavy direction into funk and jazzy-styled recordings. Rufus was formed in 1969 by Kevin Murphy and Al Ciner from the background of two rival bands in Chicago.
The extremely retro sound of Rufus Huff's self-titled album reaches back to the heyday of blues-rock in the early '70s, particularly British acts in the bluesy hard rock/nearly metal style like Led Zeppelin, Free, and Jeff Beck's early groups. This CD came about nearly 40 years after that heyday, but it sounds very much like it could have been cut way back then, Jarrod England's vocals in particular bearing mucho similarity to Robert Plant at his most macho.
Rufus Huff, "Rufus Huff," is one killer, heavy, funky, blues/rock affair, they sound like 2/3's cup of ZZ Top of the 70's, plus 1/3 cup of Pat Travers of the 70's, for a recipe of foot stomping, butt wiggling sound! It harkens back to the days of 70's heavy metal, where dirt, grit, & grease cooked up some of the best albums of that decade. People compare bands to other bands, I don't, Rufus Huff is Rufus Huff and they kick ass with this album. I'm into bands who play it how they feel it, and there's feeling here. Everyone in this band contributes, the end result, a damn ripper of an album. I turn the volume up heading down Freeway 3 on my way to work and I feel good.

Which one is Rufus? Well, neither. Rufus Huff, a four piece band, named after two obscure bluesmen, Whistlin' Rufus and Luther Huff. An eclectic mix of rock, funk, blues, boogie and "Dixie" through a stack of Marshall amps. A distinctive soun. hat which could be heard for miles around. Driving beat grinding forth from the shadowy shack in the Metcalfe County holler, deep in the clay muddy, Kentucky Bluegrass covered land.
Rufus was formed in 1969 by Kevin Murphy and Al Ciner from the background of two rival bands in Chicago. The band was a group in transition by the time they signed their deal with ABC in 1972 after a brief period with Epic. The biggest change in the group occurred that year when Paulette McWilliams, the group's original frontwoman, opted to leave the group and had friend Chaka Khan, who had provided background vocals as a session singer for the band, replace her as the sole frontwoman.
