Jim Hall was an American jazz guitarist, composer, and arranger. In addition, he was a sideman on numerous albums by other artists. 1957: Jazz Guitar (Pacific Jazz) reissued in 1964 with overdubbed drums as The Winner! (Fontana). Also reissued in 2014 as disc 2 of the 10-disc collection Jazz Guitar: Ultimate Collection, Vol. 1 (Documents).
Jim Hall, who was classically trained, took jazz guitar in another direction, while others, like Pat Martino, helped refine the style. Then along came Wes Montgomery, whose debut Riverside album, The Wes Montgomery Trio, released in 1959, signalled a new dawn for jazz guitar. The result is a sublime platform for Haden and Metheny’s unique talents, with the guitarist excelling via the deeply lyrical quality of his playing. A must have forvany jazz guitarist. The Complete Jazz Guitar. Collectors grumbled about this situation, trying to find an original LP pressing of Jazz Guitar in decent shape, though its value quickly shot up into the hundreds of dollars in the 1990s. The inadequate CD reissue lapsed from print and Hall fans wondered if anything better would eventually turn up. Fortunately, a mint copy of the original Jazz Guitar LP was located and remastered, adding the lost recording of "This Is Always" to boot, and duly issued by the European Gambit label
