The midwife's register shows he was born on 5 February; however, the church baptism records erroneously show 2 February, and this was the day on which he celebrated his birthday throughout his life. His father David was an accomplished vocalist and the first teacher of Jussi and his two brothers, Olle and Gösta, who also went on to become professional singers.

Jussi Björling (5 February 1911 – 9 September 1960) was a Swedish tenor and one of most highly regarded opera singers of the 20th century. Björling was one of the few non-Latin tenors to rival the Italian dominance of the opera world at that time. Björling was born in Borlänge. He studied singing with his father, David, an accomplished vocalist, and made his debut public appearance at the age of four with the Björling Male Quartet.

He had already become an international star by that time, having made his official major opera début at the Royal Opera in Stockholm at 19. Of course he had been singing all of his life, having even toured the US with his father and two singing brothers as the Björling Quartet when he was only eight

Björling and two of his oldest brothers toured with their father in Sweden and the US from 1919-1921. He later studied opera with John Forsell. 1928 Björling began studying at the Stockholm Conservatory. Then in 1930 he made his professional operatic debut as the Lamplighter in Manon Lescaut at the Royal Swedish Opera in Stockholm in 1930. This was followed soon after in August 1930 with his official debut at the Royal Opera in Stockholm in Mozart's Don Giovanni as Don Ottavio. Björling made his American concert debut at the Carnegie Hall in 1937.
