2009 album from the multi-talented British Jazz man, vocalist, pianist and songwriter. This album contains tracks spanning across the Pop, Hip Hop and Jazz genres, including the lead single 'I'm All Over It', an outstanding take on Rihanna's 'Don't Stop The Music' and the spectacular ballad 'Love Ain't Gonna Let You Down' as well as many more. Cullum mixes Jazz with melodic Pop and Rock into a crossover style that calls to mind such artists as Harry Connick, J. and Norah Jones. Like the exploding piano on its cover, Jamie Cullum's long-awaited new Verve album The Pursuit blows away audience and artist preconceptions leaving 14 smoldering tracks that seamlessly run the gamut from swinging standards and yearning singer-songwriter confessionals to 125 BPM house dance tracks and resurrected Broadway ballads.
It's an album that's eager to impress, and is able to do so stylishly and impressively. At the forefront of the music, as always, is Cullum's raspy crooning vocals and his somewhat unpredictable, flourishing piano skills. His charming persona has been enough to keep his last few studio outings afloat, but has occasionally struggled to deliver beyond this - especially in terms of his songs' arrangements. In a way, The Pursuit is a strangely fitting title for this collection of songs. Jamie Cullum has been pursuing a sound that breaks the mold he created for himself over the course of his discography to this point. Although it hasn't entirely been achieved, he's come extremely close - his best album by a long shot, this is substantial enough to secure enough momentum to continue in this positive direction. Stay tuned for The Achievement.
Jamie Cullum - Twentysomething (Non EU Version) Jamie Cullum. Catching Tales (Non-EU Version) Jamie Cullum. Catching Tales (EU Version) Jamie Cullum. BRIDGE: Feel it burning like a bomb raging A thousand summers grazing on your skin Restlessly anticipating so many tiny things. The pursuit of love consumes us all I'll be your Fabrice without the war Do you dream about it written for Bursting with all all of the weight of a million rhymes. Everything I know is you Let me tell you what we're listening to I'm a gentle soul I'm sure But on the stereo I'm a dictator Do you even have a tape machine?
Jamie Cullum: The Pursuit. Just One of Those Things, rearranged for Cullum by the veteran Frank Foster, rolls out over an adapted Monk lick. The Latin You and Me Are Gone has a live feel and lots of handclapping and bongos, and Cullum's trademark vocal slides and crisp piano fills fizz engagingly. His Michael Jacksonesque grunts and exhalations on Don't Stop the Music sound like the only forced references. Jazzers won't suddenly get the point of Cullum through this, but a lot more pop fans might.
