Jann Browne was selected by The California Country Music Association as "Entertainer of the Year" two years in a row and was a nominee by the Academy of Country Music as "female vocalist" of the year.

Browne's fourth album, Missed Me By a Mile, is a very different kettle of fish, and it happens to be a pretty tasty bouillabaisse; cut with a tight but soulful roots rock band (anchored by guitarist and co-producer Matt Barnes), Browne's voice is in great shape, but her music has gained some welcome grit and hard-won attitude. Like Lucinda Williams and Shelby Lynne, Jann Browne has decided there's no room in her life for Nashville polish, and it's done her a world of good - anyone looking for a strong dose of root-conscious songwriting sung by someone with top-shelf country pipes would do well to give Missed Me By a Mile a spin.

Jann Browne was raised in Indiana and developed a taste for country music from her grandparents, who were members of a square dancing troupe that often performed at bluegrass festivals. However, Browne's own musical impulses leaned more toward rock & roll and blues, and as a teenager she began performing with local rock bands. Browne still had a substantial audience in Australia and Europe, and in 1995, she recorded her third album, Count Me In, for Red Moon Records, an independent label in Europe (it later received an American release from the independent Cross Three label).
