A time and motion study (or time-motion study) is a business efficiency technique combining the Time Study work of Frederick Winslow Taylor with the Motion Study work of Frank and Lillian Gilbreth (the same couple as is best known through the biographical 1950 film and book Cheaper by the Dozen). It is a major part of scientific management (Taylorism)

A fascination with the word efficiency began in the late 19th and early 20th centuries when it was considered one of the most important concepts. For instance, factories have used it to reduce wasted time and improve the time to compete a task, while banks use it to help team members reach their sales goals. However, the goal of a time and motion study is not simply efficiency. These studies are done to create a baseline that can be used in the future when evaluating procedural, equipment, or personnel changes. The goal can be to understand the skills required to enable individuals to perform the work and, thus, to provide the correct training.

Time and Motion Studies COURSE INSTRUCTOR: Prof Time Study consists of recording times and rates of work for elements of a specified job carried out under specified conditions to obtain the time necessary to carry out a job at a defined level of performance. Time study is for cost control. timing each part and rearranging the parts into the most efficient method of working. which was essentially an oral tradition. was pioneered by Frederick Winslow Taylor. At its most basic level time studies involved breaking down each job into component parts.
The systems of time and motion studies are frequently assumed to be interchangeable terms, descriptive of equivalent theories However, the underlying principles and the rationale for the establishment of each respective method are dissimilar, despite originating within the same school of thought. Apply an allowance to the normal time to compute the standard time The allowance factors that are needed in the work are then added to compute the standard time for the task.
Time and motion studies can be a useful way to gather real world evidence of a medical intervention’s value. When the efficiency of a drug, medical device, or intervention is the outcome of interest, time and motion studies may be warranted to collect evidence of value
