Clap Your Hands Say Yeah is the eponymous debut album by Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, self-released in the . on 28 June 2005, and released in the UK on 23 January 2006 by Wichita Recordings.
Standing on top of a mountain of hype and praise after the success of their first two self-released albums, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah did what few bands in their position would do: they took a break. Rather than striking while the iron was hot and getting another release into the impatient little hands of their fan base, they walked away to pursue other projects, allowing their members to follow all of their other ideas wherever they might take them for a couple years before eventually coming back together on their third album, Hysterical.
The majority of unsigned bands never have their failure to upend the music industry held against them, bu. .you already know the deal with Clap Your Hands Say Yeah. The excitement surrounding their 2005 self-titled debut and its DIY success was certainly warranted, but two years later, blogs were still grasping at straws for the sake of "firsties," bands still wanted to get signed, and CYHSY's wildly uneven follow-up Some Loud Thunder all but acknowledged its impending backlash as a given. And yet, after a five-year, self-imposed hiatus that's been described as something of a fact-finding mission for their true identity, Hysterical freely casts Clap Your Hands Say Yeah as the very thing their detractors inaccurately claimed them to be so long ago: a band whose story is the most interesting thing about them. Truth is, Hysterical feels self-conscious from the moment you press play.

Hysterical does little to alter this. The aforementioned synths wash over the whole thing, but it's a blur made up of arpeggios, distortion and echo. It's all held together admirably by John Congleton, a producer whose own work with The Paper Chase expertly blended viciously disparate ideas. Luckily CYHSY mainman Alec Ounsworth's way of singing a melody already has an inbuilt ambiguity; it winds around the elementary music sounding resigned, sad but putting on a brave face. The rest fill the album adequately, but really only serve to further embed that keyboard massage that glues everything together. Misspent Youth is particularly poignant, the ripples of discordance and fading echo in the middle like shattering a fond flashback. Though the arrangement still sounds dense, Ounsworth's vulnerable vocal brings an intense melancholy to the song.
Clap Your Hands Say Yeah Hysterical. Clap Your Hands Say Yeah are largely known for their self-titled album. Only a good indie time to be found on this third attempt by the band. Perhaps the strongest song on the album is the title track. It is a good Brittish-inspired romp filled with electronic inspirations. The lyrics in the song get a bit muddled but don’t get in the way enjoying the song.
