Album · 1986 · 7 Songs. The Planets, Op. 32, H. 125: I. Mars, The Bringer Of War. André Previn & Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. 2. 125: II. Venus, The Bringer Of Peace. 125: V. Saturn, The Bringer Of Old Age.

Orchestra: Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. Conductor: André Previn. Composer: Gustav Holst. Audio CD (July 9, 2006). I've heard at least 10 recordings of the Planets, but there are three to which I continually return and for slightly different reasons; Dutoit with Orchestre symphonique de Montréal, Levine with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and this one. Dutoit's recording, to me, is the most mysterious and visual. He paints pictures with his interpretation that no other does. Levine, on the other hand, is the most exciting and gripping recording of the Planets I've ever heard; the CSO's brass extend the performance into the physical.

The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra (RPO) is a British orchestra based in London. It tours widely, and is sometimes called "Britain's national orchestra". The RPO was founded in 1946 by Thomas Beecham and played its first concert in Croydon on September 15, 1946. Beecham was principal conductor until his death in 1961. He was followed by then assistant conductor Rudolf Kempe, who was given the title of Conductor for Life in 1970.
