Billy Noname is an Off-Broadway musical with music and lyrics by Johnny Brandon and a book by William Wellington Mackey. It ran for 48 performances at the Truck and Warehouse Theater, from March 2, 1970 to April 12, 1970. Lucia Victor directed, and the role of Billy Noname was played by Donny Burks. The musical tells the story of a black man growing up. A recording of the original cast was released in 1996.
Noname has made an album to describe becoming, dealing and accepting adulthood with the same lyrical density that she had on Telefone which was the same subject matter. The chorus of the opening track of Telefone, Noname's exceptional 2016 debut, sets the tone for the entire album. Telefone is an album drenched in nostalgia. Noname uses her dizzying lyricism to paint the past with thick strokes. From trips to the ice cream parlor to lamenting police brutality, Telefone presents life in Chicago with the wide-eyed romanticism of a children's book.
When Noname (fka Noname Gypsy) raps, she swims in the bleakness of a life that’s seen a lot of death and change. I used to have a name that look like butterflies and Hennessy/ I’ll trade it up for happiness but joyful don’t remember me, she remembers matter-of-factly on Sunny Duet, from her new project Telefone Also like HEAVN, Telefone is very much an album about black pain, particularly black women’s pain. When she raps about her lack of confidence and belief in her dreams on Reality Check she speaks of her granny’s spirit telling her, You know they whipped us niggas? as a counter. On Bye Bye Baby she raps about abortion with gentleness and understanding, referring to a play date up to heaven soon.
