At Folsom Prison is a live album by Johnny Cash, released on Columbia Records in May 1968. After his 1955 song "Folsom Prison Blues", Cash had been interested in recording a performance at a prison. His idea was put on hold until 1967, when personnel changes at Columbia Records put Bob Johnston in charge of producing Cash's material. Cash had recently controlled his drug abuse problems, and was looking to turn his career around after several years of limited commercial success.

Folsom Prison Blues" is a song written in 1953 and first recorded in 1955 by American singer-songwriter Johnny Cash. The song combines elements from two popular folk styles, the train song and the prison song, both of which Cash continued to use for the rest of his career. It was one of Cash's signature songs. It was the eleventh track on his debut album With His Hot and Blue Guitar and it was also included (same version) on All Aboard the Blue Train.

At Folsom Prison deals with johnny cash illustrate the conflicted nature of the american mind set, with his personal life and his music to. ach track giving out crude, compassionate and bad ass stories with his lyrics. This has to be his highest achievement throughout his discography. You can feel as if you're at the prison with the roaring cheerful crowd. This is a tough one to rate. First off, this album was designed for a particular audience. At least nine songs have a character that is either involved with a crime, or else a felon. Other songs were about lovers that left, or entities known for unconditional love (mothers, dogs).

At Folsom Prison (Live). At Folsom Prison (Live) Tracklist. 1. Folsom Prison Blues (Live) Lyrics. 2. Dark as the Dungeon Lyrics. On January 13, 1968, after two days of rehearsals in a Sacramento motel, Cash and June Carter, along with the Statler Brothers, Carl Perkins and the Tennessee Three, entered Folsom State Prison in Folsom, California, to perform one of the greatest live recordings in the popular music canon: the album was released in May of that year, becoming a hit in the United. States, reaching number one on the country charts and the top 15 of the national album chart. At Folsom Prison (Live) Q&A.

Written-By – J. Cash. Hugh Cherry Introduces Johnny's Father, Ray Cash And Floyd Gressett And Closing Announcements. DVD "Johnny Cash At Folsom Prison".

However, Johnny Cash’s Folsom Prison album is a unique oddity. Sure, artists release live albums, but how many artists play in prisons, let alone one of the toughest prisons in the country at the time" Years ago, Johnny Cash saw a documentary on the prison and the documentary moved him and caused to be an advocate of prison reform. Folsom Prison is the first of a few live releases at prisons, and one can only imagine what it must have been like for a prisoner to see Johnny Cash, a man with such empathy towards prisoners, performing live just for them

Fifty years ago Johnny Cash strode into Folsom State Prison in Represa, California, behind a truckload of recording equipment and emerged with an eternal album. The union of Cash and his hungry, jailhouse audience communicated a startling authenticity, a singular moment that remains elusive to musicians who would try to recreate it. It was all at once an unflinching glimpse of prison life, a showcase for the country legend’s panther swagger, and a communion of the disenfranchised during a decade concerned with social justice. And it marked a renaissance in Cash’s life and career. It’s not as great of a song as I Walk the Line, but the Folsom album represents the quintessential Johnny Cash at that moment in his life. There is nothing you can compare it to. In This Article: Johnny Cash, Johnny Cash At Folsom Prison, Live at Folsom Prison, Rosanne Cash. Want more Rolling Stone?

Folsom Prison looms large in Johnny Cash's legacy, providing the setting for perhaps his definitive song and the location for his definitive album, At Folsom Prison. The ideal blend of mythmaking and gritty reality, At Folsom Prison is the moment when Cash turned into the towering Man in Black, a haunted troubadour singing songs of crime, conflicted conscience, and jail.

Reviews:
  • DrayLOVE
Terrific pressing! You can hear a lot more detail which seems to be lost on CD remasters (including a very distinct prison bell in the background of '25 Minutes To Go'). The energy of the performance really comes out in this pressing - every instrument is clear and audible, and it just sounds so, so good!
  • Vinainl
Remarkable recording, is the vinyl wax or is it just the booklet? I ask this question since I do not like color vinyls
  • Iraraeal
Get it tomorrow. Today was a energy collapse and lights turned out. So I had to leave. But 180gram ,2x brown vinyl, 16 page book, gatefold cover, download code - Nothing to think about cause almost all of the "we are vinyl" series are good from the sound. Let's see...
  • Black_Hawk_Down.
excellent reissue, a complete show with a nice booklet and beautifull photos
  • Saithi
i just looked at record one under a bright light and the vinyl has these weird streaking/mottling marks which may or may not be corrected after hours of washing and cleaning , for this reason alone i have to award 0/5 stars .avoid unless you can find it in a bargain bin.on the positive side , it does have a poly lined paper sleeve .i did get this record at a good price so i spose i will have to play it and hope it sounds better than it looks.UPDATE ... after playing both records i am happy to say the terrible look of the vinyl doesn't affect the sound at all but i'm still a little pissed about all the weird marks , if you were to buy this in the hopes of re selling it you would likely lose all yer dough when the new owner spots all of these marks.i suppose there is a chance a dumb hipster wouldn't inspect it under a strong light but not worth the risk .
  • Manazar
Classic album! I love the sounds of the prisoners and the back and forth Johnny has with them. Amazing performance.
  • Qusserel
The digital download doesn’t match the album. I think it the 1999 reissue. It’s missing the supporting acts and the rehearsal disc. Guess I’m going to have to rip my own from the vinyls.
  • I ℓ٥ﻻ ﻉ√٥υ
Yes, this is also what I have discovered. Luckily I was able to find another digital copy elsewhere that had both nights performances, but the rehearsal and bonus single was not included. If you get these ripped off vinyl let me know! Maybe you can upload them to youtube or something
  • Goltizuru
I love the introduction to this where he says 'don't cheer when Johnny walks on stage, cheers after he says 'Hello, I'm Johnny Cash'.
  • Kearanny
My copy is made in Europe and the rehearsals vinyl is a 12".
  • MARK BEN FORD
general audio quality is fine but I've been through 4 copies of this and all discs looked like they were dragged through a hedge - 100% shitty QC
  • Survivors
What we're really missing from this concert we're still missing, namely the complete film footage. Not another documentary or a mash-up, or a tribute, or a duets album, or Statler Brothers outtakes, but the footage of the show that they obviously went through great trouble to capture. I guess we'll have to wait for the 75th anniversary when there's nobody left to care.
  • Siatanni
Only 2500 were pressed for the US. More were pressed for the UK, don't know now many.I think for the UK version the rehearsal disk is a 10" vinyl and the US version is a 12" vinyl.
  • Abandoned Electrical
how many did they press, on the sites they say 2500, but i have number 5224
  • Minnai
2500 is for the US market AFAIK. However, this was released worldwide, which is why you see numbers higher than 2500.
  • Walan
Heard of numbers over 6500. Disappointing. Thought this was 2500.
  • Lestony
Any comments on the quality of this pressing?I have nothing to go by, other than a few I've heard here and there, but this is one of the few country singers I love.So... I am on the fence.
  • Vikus
Awesome, thanks for the heads up.Def looking into getting one
  • Just_paw
Thank you for the help! I'm sure I'll find one in time; good to know it's worth it
  • Felhann
Pretty quality sounding. A couple are a litte off centre or warped but don't seem to effect the quality too much.
  • 6snake6
hi mark. the quality of the pressing is extremely good. you got the four lps with really clean production. the last record, is a little bit muffled in my own personal opinon. but its fair enough if you consider that it's a rehearsal that's been recorded, probably with not the best suitable means. but other than that, you buy a lovely edition, extremely good overall, for a great price nice booklet and really great photo shoots.
  • Doomwarden
Great album, legendary performance! The disc is quite dynamic, actually (DR 12) and it's a joy listening to this wonderful music.
  • Daron
I have seen 3 copies of this album and all have a slight edge warp just like my copy. Gatefold issue? Booklet issue? Tight shrinkwrap? I dunno and it plays fine & sounds good - I just hate watching my tonearm move up/down like a boat on the sea. If someone has a mint, unwarped version I'd be glad to take it off your hands.
  • Nalmergas
Gorgeous sounding pressing and the brown vinyl looks like wood. Nice gatefold sleeve and great booklet. A stellar package for sure!!
  • Taur
Remarkable recording, is the vinyl wax or is it just the booklet? I ask this question since I do not like color vinyls
  • Whiteseeker
One of my favorite Johnny Cash albums. A must have for any country fan!
  • Lemana
The QRP pressing of this release (it has the same bar code) came later and was cut by Kevin Gray at Coherent Audio.
  • Nagis
Very good reissue of a truly classic album, by the immortal Johnny Cash. The extra songs are a nice adition, even if they (most of the times, understandably) weren't part of the original album. To me it makes it even more real. Plus, June Carter forgeting the lyrics of "I got a woman" midway through the song and saying "Oops..." it always cracks me up. Sound quality-wise, I think it's very good. I've never listened to any older or "premium" issues on vinyl, but to me it sounds as good as any other version I've ever heard.
  • Burilar
Cash at his best. Hard to beat his work at Folsom. A+
  • Heri
I need some help figuring out what version my copy is. It's early that's for sure, cause it's got the "360 STEREO SOUND". But the matrix numbers don't seem to match the ones already listed on here. Side 1: XSM136060-1AA side 2: XSM136061-1AFThanks in advance!
  • Winenama
Love this album!!! Johnny was one hell of a story teller!
  • Androlhala
Does anyone know if the sleeve misprint was corrected? My sleeve lists a song as "with June Carter" that doesn't feature her.
