Stephen Johnson Turre (born 12 September 1948 Omaha, Nebraska) is an American jazz trombonist and a pioneer of using seashells as instruments, a composer, arranger, and educator at the ory level. For fifty-five years, Turre has been active in jazz, rock, and Latin jazz – in live venues, recording studios, television, and cinema production.
Luxuriating in timeless melodies and swathed in lush strings, Turre makes his horn sing with delicate lyricism and subtle beauty. Of course, the irrepressible trombonist can’t help but unleash his fiercely swinging side, peppering his ballad set with a few pulse-quickeners here and there. No shows booked at the moment.
Right There is primarily a straight-ahead set featuring Steve Turre on trombone and shells in a sextet with violinist John Blake, cellist Akua Dixon Turre, pianist Benny Green, bassist Buster Williams, and drummer Billy Higgins.
