Album · 1984 · 11 Songs. Even in an era of radical post-punk, The Smiths is an utterly unique debut. From the woozy charms of Reel Around the Fountain, Morrissey’s fragile croon commences its love affair with Johnny Marr’s twinkling guitar. Being that This Charming Man and Reel Around the Fountain are some of The Smiths’ most complex songs, the rest of the record seems like a draft, all be it a very good draft. It wouldn’t be until two years later that they would perfect their sound that is evident in this LP’s high points. Despite some of the filler here, it is still a wonderful debut from one of the greatest acts of the 80s. 2. 7mo. Gassing At The Walmart. 81.
