Umphrey’s McGee entered . Labs Studio in Chicago in November of 2016 to record what would become the band’s eleventh full-length studio album. After twenty years, thousands of concerts, and ten studio albums, on January 12, progressive rock stalwarts Umphrey’s McGee released their newest album it’s not us. The creation and release of their eleventh studio album culminated in a very intimate concert at Chicago’s Park West that doubled as the release party. The atmosphere at Park West was definitely more casual and relaxed than the raging musical marathons a UM show is usually known for. The short set was highlighted by stories, anecdotes, and other nuggets of UM information that was given by the band members themselves

UMPHREY'S McGEE seemed to coalesce sometime around 1997, and like a lot of great University groups cut their teeth in other bands. The line up has remained particularly stable: Brendan Bayliss - vocals and guitar. As I listened through the album for the first time, the arch title 'it's not us' made sense. So, where does it sit in the current spectrum? This is 'new rock' for those older listeners who lament the passing of the golden age of rock - the album era. I suspect they will have the same albums in their collections as the band members. Usually on old fashioned vinyl, and lovingly curated over the years.
Umphrey’s McGee have announced details on their 11th studio album, "It’s Not Us", which will be released on January 12, 2018. Comprising 11 wide-ranging, vibrant songs, the album is a dynamic statement that showcases the versatility and world-class musicianship that is at the band’s core. Powered by a bombastic beat, funkified rhythms, fiery fretwork and a chantable refrain lead single "The Silent Type" is an id-provoked reflection on temptation and its potential consequences.
It marked the last appearance on an Umphrey's McGee recording by Mirro, who left to go to medical school and was replaced on New Year's Eve 2002 by Kris Myers, who had a Master's degree in jazz drumming. Local Band Does OKlahoma, their next live album, was also released in 2003. A second studio album, Anchor Drops, appeared in 2004 on the SCI Fidelity label run by fellow jam band the String Cheese Incident, and a second DVD, Wrapped Around Chicago: New Years at the Riv, was issued in 2005. In 2006, Umphrey's McGee released their third studio album, Safety in Numbers . Following a live release, Live from Missoula, MT, in early 2017, Umphrey's McGee returned with the studio single "Half Delayed" from their forthcoming 11th album, It's Not Us. ~ Jesse Jarnow.
