Wooden Shjips’ fourth album heads further into the earthier direction of its 2011 predecessor, West, and casts even more radiant rays of Golden State sunshine onto the band’s once-foreboding hypno-drone-rock. So it’s doubly ironic that the most conventionally rendered track on Back to Land is also its most revelatory: With the closing Everybody Knows, Wooden Shjips embark on their maiden voyage into melancholic (if still fuzzed-out) balladry, and it’s a rewarding one at that. As usual, frontman Ripley Johnson’s words are barely decipherable above the song's Crazy Horse haze, but the affecting, crestfallen feeling he invests in his performance cuts through loud and clear.

San Francisco’s Wooden Shjips have some mightily impressive facial fuzz. Guitarist Ripley Johnson is the most hardcore, with his grizzled beard and moustache, but the rest of his his group are hardly letting the side down: between them they’ve got (at last count) two beards, a moustache and an impressive pair of Victorian-style mutton chop sideburns. Even the packaging of their fourth album ‘Back to Land’ is exactly the kind of thing you’d expect from a band this beardy: never mind the Crosby, Stills And Nash-inspired band name, how about the ‘Led Zeppelin III’-referencing cover art? But while ‘Back to Land’ is decidedly acid-fried, it’s sleeker and more sublime than you might think, with an irresistible forward thrust that owes more to Neu! than to The Grateful Dead.

Somewhere between 2011's West and 2013's Back to Land, members of the Bay Area psych rock act Wooden Shjips left their picturesque home base of San Francisco for the rainier environments of Portland, Oregon. Wooden Shjips' identity had always been somewhat rooted in their place in the San Francisco scene, going so far as to have an aerial photo of the Golden Gate Bridge adorn the cover of West

Back To Land was laid to tape at Jackpot Recording Studios in Portland by Kendra Lynn and mixed by Larry Crane. It was recorded over an 11-day session, resulting in some of the most detailed and spacious recordings of their career. Back To Land is a breakthrough record for the Wooden Shjips: nuanced, varied and utterly addictive. The band will be touring extensively in the US and Europe November through February. Still, "Back to Land".

For a band of cloudy-eyed cosmonaut warlocks, Wooden Shjips sure do sound friendly, and they’re only getting friendlier with time. But even then, there was a melodic heft to those circular rhythms; they weren’t interested in testing anyone’s patience. On 2011’s West, the band’s third album and their first recorded in an actual studio, they tamed some of their.

Mine did not come in a tip-on jacket. Am I just missing out?

Wooden Shjips, San Francisco’s neo-psychedelic hippy-dippy pirate band have been around long enough to be the centerpiece of hazy inspired legends, half-truths, and enough rumors to fill Owsley’s chemistry set twice over ... so, let me set the story straight, or perhaps fuel the fires and fan the flames of these high flying midnight musical alchemists. Now ... given the right atmosphere, you might get vocalist and founder of Wooden Ships, Ripley Johnson, to admit that back in 2003 he was still on the hippy trail, not in search of fortune or fame, but for musicians who could share his vision for crafting acid laced tunes filled with distortion in much the same vein as The Velvet Underground had done ... though replacing the speed induced edges with a softer more melodic trance inducing trippy haze. And while he wasn’t necessarily looking for brilliantly talented musicians, those are exactly what showed up on his doorstep, talented outcasts of the music industry who’d been raised on lo-fi droning sojourns into the nether regions of the subconscious. As luscious and enticing as their previous releases have been, Back To Land sees the band pulling together all they’ve learned, and creating one of the most cohesive hallucinogenic bodies of work you’re ever going to treat your wayward ears to. The songs move together, they rise with the sun and set with the moon, though not always in that order ... and if you happen to stumble onto their acoustic version of “These Shadows,” you’ve just added an extra day to your week. But what separates this release from their others, is the length of the tracking, where each song has been crafted to clock in at around five minutes. And what five minute sonic gems these are, proving that capturing the essence is always rewarding, and certainly allows for expansive gestures while preforming live. Here, Wooden Shjips don’t weigh you down or bake your brain into submission ... Back To Land gives you room to breathe, and a chance to raise your head into the clear air of the stratosphere before diving headlong into the narcotic laced psychedelic waves and wobbly-headed loopings that are so very satisfying.*** If you get a chance to purchase the vinyl, score it. There are a couple of versions: -First there's the die cut slipcase, one of the most intoxicating pieces of artwork to float in since those produced in the 60's. The slipcase houses a brilliant gatefold, and low and behold, when you go to slip the record into the jacket, even the inside has been decorated with a swirling hypnotic design.-The vinyl comes in a stunning pink, a lime green, and in the standard black. There is also a red vinyl, but as of this review, is only available at show purchases.-The pink vinyl comes with a 7" single/EP of sorts ... but not always.-All slipcases are not die cut, so if you order on line, make sure you ask questions.-Some people have complained about the low quality of mastering, but that's a debatable discussion.

I have this Green Vinyl Version but the Bar Code printed on the outer sleeve ends in a 7 as opposed to the 8 shown in the description above.
  • Buridora
Yes mine has the 7 at the end of the barcode too.
  • Sarin
Does anyone know the numbers on the pressings of this? When they say "limited" just how "limited"?
  • BORZOTA
In the UK, 200 green vinyl were sold at independent record stores with the 7" single.
