High on Fire is an American heavy metal band from Oakland, California, that was formed in 1998. Matt Pike, the band's frontman and founder, also plays guitar for the influential stoner metal band Sleep. High on Fire was founded in 1998 by Sleep guitarist Matt Pike, drummer Des Kensel, and bassist George Rice (from Dear Deceased, who originally auditioned to be the band's vocalist).

High On Fire continues to refine their sound with each successive album. Though they've mainlined their most direct influences (Motorhead, Sabbath, Venom), they aren't content to just rehash their predecessors templates. Each HOF record is a distinct and unique beast, showing a range of flexibility and experimentation without alienating their core principals. The drums in How Dark We Pray and Snakes for the Divine seem to stick to me the most. On this album he definitely continued his tradition of being a drumming powerhouse. I’m sure a lot of fans were worried whenever they saw that the album was being produced by Greg Fidelman, who some may despise because of his work on Metallica’s ‘Death Magnetic’ and Slayer’s ‘World Painted Blood’.

Luckily for all involved, when it finally did arrive, the album was, if not quite worth the painful wait, then certainly satisfying enough to erase its memories pretty quickly, since High on Fire's wildly engaging brand of pulverizing, apocalyptic battle metal returned unchanged and utterly undiminished

A few things are noticeably different in High on Fire’s sound almost instantly. The production has definitely improved, although it is still far from perfect. The bass is perpetually audible, and the opening sequence in the title track is crisp, an indicator of the solid sound quality. The only gripe people will have with the production is that although certain aspects of it are better, the album still doesn’t sound like one that came out of 2010

Matt Pike, High on Fire’s frontman, served time in the legendary stoner trio Sleep. But with Snakes for the Divine he’s making his strongest case yet for why people who aren’t into metal should at the very least appreciate music thi. asty. The most impressive aspect of what is a boundlessly impressive album is Snakes for the Divine’s deft summation of various different metallic styles. It’s tight, concise and thrillingly sharp – what makes High on Fire’s fifth album such a success is its intricacy and balance that allows it to appeal to more than your friendly neighbourhood metalhead. Those in the know will nod in approval; everyone else hitherto untouched by the gnarled clutch of Californian metal can consider themselves very much invited to get involved.
